The government of Bayelsa state has inaugurated a 250 man oil and gas taskforce to combat oil theft and pipeline vandalism in the state.
Gov. Henry Seriake Dickson said that the aim of the initiative was to meaningfully engage youths in the state in curbing revenue lost from pipeline vandalism.
The governor who was represented by his Special Adviser on Oil and Gas, Mr Felix Bonny-Ayah said that securing oil and gas installations against vandalism, bunkering and other anti social vices for the good of the state and the nation was of strategic importance.
He also said that the taskforce would be used to shut down facilities of companies that violate laid down rules in the state.
He however urged the new employees to see their recruitment as an opportunity to serve.
Hon. Bonny Ayah also advised them to remain law abiding citizens of the state and the country at large.
The government assured residents that vandalism and bunkering activities would be completely tackled in the state as according to him, the taskforce will work with the various security agencies and other relevant bodies saddled with similar responsibility."
Barr. Tare Porri, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth in Ekeremor Local Government said he was confident that oil companies in the state would support the move to ensure a safer environment.
Porri urged the task force to be loyal to the course of their operations, adding that the administration was committed to sustaining an economically viable state.
Responding on behalf of the taskforce members, Mr. Woko Pakapiri said they are greatful to the government for the initiative and promised to give their best in the discharge of their duties.
The government also said more youths will be incorporated into the system subsequently.
Also inaugurated is the Swamp Area Oil and Gas Producing Communities Association to work with the mandate of the state taskforce
