    DELTA STATE GOVERNMENT SECURED PERMANENT MEASURE OF FLOODING MENACE ALONG REFINERY ROAD BY MEKAVAL HOTEL AREA AND NAVAL BARRACK AND OTHER PARTS OF WARR



    The Hon Commissioner  for Environment Hon Barr John Nani and staffs, Ministry of Environment in collaboration with the Delta State Environmental Sanitation Taskforce Chairman Comr. Kingsley Odiaka  Iweka mnim  and team commenced canal opening around Uvwie and Warri south local government.

    The Refinery road /Jakpa road Canal Dragging  was to enable proper discharging of the overflowing Borrow put opposite White House junction to the existing canal and the incessant flooding along Refinery road and Effurun  Naval barrack.

    The dragging is timely as flood rendered so many residents of the area homeless in the past 6months.

    It was also observed that developers built on the natural Waterway thereby returning the flowing system back to the main road and this has been the reason flood took over the area as there is no way to discharge to the flowing line.

    Speaking to the news men, the C. O Nigerian Navy Capt. F. M Ture accompanied by his deputy, CDR. Akisikun,  S. O incharge of  barrack Maintenance  unit  commended the state government for coming to their aid. According to him, the flooding have caused the Nigerian Navy a lot; even the NNS hospital were Submerged and this caused them to relocate their patients.

    On the two  buildings blocking the canal, the C. O called on the state government to address the issue and put permanent measure in place.

    Commissioner for Environment Hon Barr John Nani on his part said that invitation letters Will be given to the owners of the  buildings built on the natural waterway to come to his office where ministry of Justice and the Ministry of lands and survey will be present to address the issue once and for all. According to him, owners of the buildings will have to create discharging Culvert which will connect the existing canal or face the risk of losing their buildings.

    He also cautioned those who derive pleasure in throwing debris and refuse into the canals and drainages to desist as this  taskforce is commissioned to arrest anyone caught in the act of indiscriminate dumping

    Earlier, the Uvwie council supervisory counsellor for environment Hon Collins Ighrakpara on behalf of residents of the area commended the State Governor Sen. Dr. Arthur Okowa  for coming to the aid of the residents of the area who packed out of their various houses since the rain started six months ago as their bedrooms suddenly become fish pond.

    The Team supervising the opening led by the Delta State Environmental Sanitation Taskforce Chairman Comr. Kingsley Odiaka Iweka mnim accompanied by Assistant director in the Environment Ministry who also is the Secretary to the Sanitation Taskforce Mrs. F. Atigan, Warri Area officers of the Ministry and others also supervised dredging of the discharging point of Ajaminmogha canal by the Olu palace as reported by the Council boss Hon. Mofe Edema to enable proper flow to the Warri River.

    Bishop Joshua Aiguekegbe , G. O Victory Revival church int'l commended the state government for coming to their aid. According to him, the flooding affected the residents adversely and also recalled that the highest of all was the collapse of Mekaval Hotel Last year and plead for continuous maintenance of the canal year to year.

    The Team will this morning work on the Alegbor Okoribi canal which has also been the major cause of flooding around PTI road.
