Score DTHA high
· Tasks members on bills, economy, others
The Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Monday Igbuya on Tuesday expressed satisfaction with the high degree of cooperation among the three arms of government.
Igbuya spoke in Asaba on Tuesday at the resumption of plenary.
He noted that the expectations of Deltans from the assembly were high but explained that the House had members who are committed to doing things right.
Said he; “We have a date with history. Many years from now, posterity will ask one simple question: What laws did the 6th Assembly make? I am certain history will give us a commendable place in its annals”.
Specifically, Igbuya said the Sixth Assembly in its first year received a total of twenty-three bills (23), out of which, fourteen (14) were passed into law.
He described the recent town hall meetings in the various constituencies as a positive development and a huge plus for democracy.
“I hope the recess has afforded us the opportunity to interact with the people whose mandate we hold in trust. I believe the information gathered during the town hall meetings will help us realize our aspiration to make Delta State one of the enviable states in the country. I also hope the issues highlighted during the town hall meetings will serve as a guide to our legislative activities even now”.
Igbuya said the Honourable Members deserve a pat on the back for improving the living standard of the people and increasing their joy. .
“The strength of any legislature lies in its degree of cohesiveness. A united legislature will always resist external influence and manipulation. It will always stand on the side of the people. We must resist all temptations that could create disaffection among us. Let us continue to maintain peace and unity” he counseled.
Igbuya, who reflected on the challenges facing the state, advised the members to focus on bills that will expand the economic base of the state.
“We have serious economic problems in the country. Projected revenues are falling. The problems of the economy cannot be solved by blame shifting. We must face these problems squarely”.
He urged members of the deliberative assembly to show greater resolve towards the realization of the noble goals.
“There are pending bills in need of urgent attention. We shall expedite action on these bills. I equally urge you to rise to the challenges in the writing and sponsorship of bills that will stimulate economic development as well as encourage peace, unity and stability. The standing committees of the House must continue to carry out their oversight functions. Let us not allow critics to distract us” he said.
He admonished his colleagues not to relent in the task of taking the state to greater heights.
“I wish to seize this opportunity to affirm our unwavering commitment to the actualization of a great Delta. Deltans want purposeful legislation. We must continue to improve governance, business and livelihood. We must continue to give good and quality representation. We must maintain the symbiotic relationship between us and the governor to ensure that more dividends of democracy come to the people. We must continue to work with the people” he said.
Igbuya, a legislator not given to flippant talk, appealed to the lawmakers to continuously make the business of the House a team work
“Remember our people will respect us not for what we do but also what we say and how we say it” he added.
