Delta State Governor Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa has decried the devastating effects of strike actions by workers in the health sector on the lives and health of Nigerians.
The Governor stated this today (4/11/2016) while addressing staff of the Delta State University Teaching Hospital, DELSUTH, Oghara, and members of the community in Ethiope west local government, after inspecting facilities of the health institution.
The Governor said lives which were lost during strike actions could not be quantified, describing it as a contradiction to their professional oath of office as Doctors and health workers.
He said strike actions should be the last option after every avenues of negotiation had been explored, and called on labour leaders to be realistic and considerate in making demands in the face of the economic recession.
Governor Okowa urged the management of the institution to synergise with the union in restoring the glory of the health institution, and promised to address issues affecting the school within the limit of available resources.
The Chairman, Governing Board of DELSUTH, Dr Chris Oghenechovwen, said the institution was faced with the problem of decayed infrastructures, lack of equipment and training, and shortage of manpower.
Others who spoke which included heads of unions in the institution said they were ready to partner with management, and expressed optimism that Governor Okowa would transform the hospital to world standard.
Governor Okowa had on arrival at DELSUTH inspected the theatres, laboratories, emergency unit, wards and delivery rooms accompanied by some top government functionaries.
