UNDER 20 WOMEN WORLD CUP: Nigeria Beat Spain…

NIGERIA Under 20 national female side, the Falconets early this morning defeated the Spanish team in the last group game at the Under 20 Women World Cup in Papua Guinea.

The Falconets rose from a humiliating defeat in its first game against Japan losing six goals to nothing but went forward to thrash Canada 3-1 to get its first three points with a heavy goal deficit that may have cost her advancement into the quarter final stage.

Spain struck in the first seven minutes when Nigeria could not clear properly in the vital area.

It took just four minutes for the Falconets to reply and draw level. The match then dragged till the end of the half with Spain getting the upper hand.

The second half opened with a revitalized Nigerian side mounting pressure on the Spaniards because a win in the game and a draw in the match between Japan and Canada would have guaranteed an automatic qualification to the next stage. So, the side’s captain, Ihezuo came into a cross from Adeboyejo, beat two defenders and scored at 74 minutes.

The Falconets nearly made it three but wasted the clear chance. The Spain side tried to redeem its image by at least snatching a draw but that was not to be.

Even with the win, the Nigerian side may not qualify into the knockout stage because Japan whipped Canada 5-0.

Nigeria, Japan and Spain all have six points but with Japan and Spain having superior goal advantages.

But there is still a chance for Nigeria to advance on a Best Loser platform if there is that option in this tournament.
