As part of the fulfilment of the Ifeanyi Okowa administration’s campaign promises, the Delta state government, yesterday approved the construction and rehabilitation of six roads across the three senatorial districts of the state.
Briefing newsmen on the outcome of the executive council meeting in Asaba on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Patrick Ukah, said that the roads were meant to bring economic development closer to the people and open up the various communities.
Ukah listed the roads to include; “the rehabilitation and asphalt overlay of the 24 kilometre Nsukwa/Ejeme-Aniogor/Owa-Alidinma road cutting across Aniocha South, Ndokwa West and Ika South Local Government Areas; the rehabilitation and asphalt overlay of 12 kilometre Ekrerhavwe/Orhoakpor/Isiokolo Road in Ughelli North and Ethiope East Local Government Areas, the continuation of the reconstruction and completion of phase III, 3.75 kilometre Amai/Ezionum/Abbi Road in Ndokwa West Local Area, the reconstruction of 3.1 kilometre Ovwian Main Road, off Udu Road in Udu Local Government Area; the construction of 1.5 kilometre Oporoza Palace Road in Gbaramatu kingdom in Warri South-West Local Government Area and the construction of 2.1 kilometre Rigid Concrete Pavement Road at Obitobon Elolo Ajakunogbe-Orubu Road Ogidigben, Warri South-West Local Government.’’
He called for public support to enable the state government deliver the dividends of democracy to the people, saying that other roads would be given attention to link various communities.
Ukah also gave an assurance that when the road networks are completed, they would open up agrarian communities and boost the economy of the state.
The commissioner disclosed that, apart from the intercity road construction initiative, streets in Asaba, Warri and other urban cities were receiving government’s attention.
He said that, apart from the road projects, the state government has embarked on the construction of a state secretariat to accommodate all the ministries and halt payment of rent.
“The on-going Asaba Airport project rehabilitation was a major and significant project being embarked on by government. On completion, bigger planes like Boeing 747 could land at the airport,’’ he said.
