Ayama Killing: Ethnic War Looms In Delta As Udu Youths Ask Ijaws To Vacate Urhoboland

ETHNIC war looms in Delta state as youths of Udu local government area give Ijaws resident in their locality two weeks to relocate or face reprisals following reported killing, burning and occupation of Ayama and Epama, two Udu settlements by Ijaw troop mobilised from neighboring Isaba, Warri South West council area.

Udu youths, led by Sunday Subi, have been tense since November 10 when when outgoing Assistant Commissioner of Police, Warri Area Command, Mohammed Mu’Azu, confirmed the killing of Obruche Sunday, a youth of Ayama, an outpost of Aladja, by men from neighboring Isaba for blocking Ijaw movement of stolen oil and illegally refined products through Ayama.

In a save-our-soul message to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa presented to the press at a briefing in Otor-Udu, headquarters of Udu council, Subi flayed the escalation of the Ijaw attacks on Udu communities as the attackers invaded Ayama and Epame, adding that, “Several persons were killed and several others held hostage.

” Subi declared that, “Youths of Udu Kingdom call on all Ijaw indigenes resident in Udu Local Government Area to relocate from Udu Local Government. This call has become necessary over the un- ending killing and kidnapping of Urhobo people by the Ijaws. “We strongly demand immediate release of Mr. and Mrs. Austine Oduara and the other five Aladja indigenes held hostage in Ijaw communities as well as Mrs. Baby College and her son, Ediri. We also call on all Urhobos in Ijaw lands to come back home as soon as possible.

” “Many Urhobo lost their lives at that time. In 1976, one prominent Udu son from Ukpovwin Mr. Idian was brutally murdered at Ozobo in Burutu Local Government Area. In 2003, another prominent Udu son, Velvet Oyibode from Oghior was also murdered in cold blood by the Ijaws of Ogodobri and Ayakoromo of Bomadi and Burutu Local Government Areas respectively.”
