DELTA GOVT WADES INTO IGBIDE, OKPOLO-ENWHE LAND DISPUTE

OLEH—FOLLOWING the wanton destruction of lives and property, Delta State Government has waded into the protracted land dispute between Igbide and Okpolo-Enwhe communities in Isoko South Local Government Area.

This came as the leadership of the warring communities signed an undertaking to end the six months old crisis and maintain law and order in their communities.

The government assured of its resolve to collaborate with the council’s administration to implement the  recommendations of the peace and reconciliation committee put in place to proffer permanent solutions to the crisis. It will be recalled that hostilities broke out in the communities on May 6, 2016 after over 40 years of legal tussle, resulting in the death of several people and burning of over seven houses in the areas.

Addressing newsmen at Oleh after a security meeting attended by the council Chairman, Sir Ithiako Ikpokpo, President-General of Isoko Development Union, Chief Iduh Amadhe, leadership of the communities, security operatives and other stakeholders, Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Festus Agas, announced that the communities had been told to steer clear of the disputed area until amicable resolution of the contentious issues.

He said: “The Chairman of the local government area, Sir Ikpokpo has set up a peace committee which made some recommendations to government.

The government looked at it and saw the need to further engage the people on the need to faithfully implement some of the decisions they took. One of the decisions they took was that both communities should maintain areas where they had possessions before the crisis and above all, we agreed that the disputed areas should be allowed to lie fallow till the state government boundary committee will demarcate the boundary between the two communities.”
