    OKOWA MOURNS WOMEN OF AFRICA FOUNDER ALICE UKOKO


    Delta State Governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa has expressed sadness over the demise of the Founder of “Women of Afrika” Charity, Mrs Alice Ukoko who died at a London hospital on November 19, 2016.

    Governor Okowa in a statement on Monday by his Chief Press Secretary, Charles Aniagwu lauded the late Mrs Ukoko's contributions to the fight against female circumcision tagged "Female Genital Mutilation'' and her commitment to the empowerment of the women of Africa as well as her vision for the future of women in the Africa Diaspora and around the World.

    The late Mrs Alice Ukoko created and directed the drama "The African Maiden'' to enable the culture recognise the damage it does to African girl children throughout their lives.

    "On behalf of the government and people of Delta State, I mourn the exit of the iconic Mrs Alice Ukoko who fought against harmful traditional practices against women and the girl child.

    Governor Okowa noted that The African Maiden contributed to the enactment of the British Female Circumcision Act of 2003.

    The statement further said "Mrs Ukoko will be sorely missed by lot of women she has empowered through her foundation "Women of Afrika'' Charity adding that " her contributions to women development globally brought pride and recognition to Nigeria and Delta State where she hails from.

    "In order to immortalize the late women liberation heroine, I urge women of Africa to emulate the ideals of the late Mrs Alice Ukoko by ensuring that women always stand for their own.'' the Governor stated.

    Until her death, Mrs Ukoko was an activist for women’s right and political liberation who hails from Uzere in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State.
