    ILLEGAL MINING: DELTA GOVT ORDER CLOSURE OF DREDGING SITES


    The Delta State Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Barr. John Obukohwo Nani has ordered the immediate closure of all Dredging sites without an approved Environmental Impact Assessment(EIA) in the state describing it as evil and sheer wickedness for a dredge owner to dredge sediment without recourse to the degradation that such activities can caused to the environment.

    Hon. Nani gave the matching order when he led officials of the ministry and the special taskforce on Dredging and haulage to clamp down various dredging sites in the state capital, Asaba saying the activities of this illegal miners are not only impacting negatively on the environment but destroying public infrastructure such as road with their trucks.

    "We have warned all Dredge owners in the state to ensure full compliance with the the EIA act and the state Ecology laws or face the wrath of government". He also charge the federal ministry of Mine and Steel to ensure that stringent measures be adopted in the process of approving a dredging permit to ensure absolute protection of infrastructures and aquatic live.

    Speaking further, Hon. Nani stressed that the EIA report is for the overall good of all stakeholders including the dredge owners as it will help protect their business and safeguard the life's of it workers/operators.

    "The world is facing a precarious scenario especially with the critical issue of climate change. This is why it becomes necessary for us to take all possible measures to ensure the safety of the environment for the next generations by employing proper methods to the process of dredging. We can make quite a substantial contribution to put an end to the negative environmental effects of dredging if which ensure strict compliance with extant rules and regulations guiding it operations. He added.
