    The Delta State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nicholas Azinge, has pledged the Ministry’s support towards the improvement of oral healthcare in the state and the nation at large.
    The Delta State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nicholas Azinge made the pledge recently at his office in Asaba when the Dental Health Committee, Nigerian Medical Association, Delta State branch, paid him a courtesy visit.

    Dr. Azinge commended the Committee’s efforts at the creation of the Dental Surgeons Directory and urged that such should be made accessible on the internet for wider coverage of their activities.

    He further stressed the need for professionalism in the discharge of their duties while urging them to forward a comprehensive report and proposal on their needs assessment for the attention and expedited action by the Ministry.

    Speaking earlier, Dr. Vivian Omo-Aghoja, Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, Central Hospital, Sapele, said one of the missions of the Committee is the establishment of important oral health statistics among the people of Delta state in order to lay a foundation for the improvement of oral healthcare in the state and the nation at large.

    She also stated that the Committee strives to reduce and eventually alleviate the burden of oral disease in the State and nation at large, by proposing policies that are favourable to optimum oral health care of Deltans and the increased training of skilled/specialized oral healthcare personnel.

    Dr. Omo-Aghoja implored the Honourable Commissioner to assist the Committee meet its 2017 targets. These include the expansion of Dental Services in Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH) to accommodate more specialties; improvement of the facilities in General Hospitals across the State, and the re-establishment of Dental School in Delta State University (DELSUTH).

    She revealed that a Dental Surgeon’s Directory for Delta State has been created as well as the re-establishment of the Nigerian Dental Association, Delta State Chapter.

    According to her, activities to mark the 20th International Oral Health Day in the State include health education on oral hygiene practices in all the centres that offer dental services in Warri, Ughelli, Sapele, Eku, Ekpan, Ibusa, Delta State University Teaching Hospital, Oleh, Agbor and Asaba. This will culminate in the grand finale at the Federal Government College, Warri where lectures on this year’s theme (‘Live Mouth Smart’), oral hygiene practices and free dental checks for the participants, will hold.

    She added that the participants are drawn from twenty (20) secondary schools, market women associations, youths in the locality and women faith based organizations.
