    DELTA ASSEMBLY RESUMES PLENARY AFTER TWO WEEKS BREAK ...As Oborevwori presides, promises open door policy ...Lift suspension on Igbuya, Owhefere ...reinstate Owhefere as Majority Leader




    ...Constitute Select Committee

    Delta State House of Assembly today resumed plenary after a two weeks break, with the newly elected Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori presiding over 25 members in attendance.

    The house lifted the three months suspension slammed on the the erstwhile Speaker, Rt. Hon. Monday Igbuya and the member representing Isoko North Constituency, Hon Tim Owhefere following a motion moved under matters of urgent public importance by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Friday Osanebi, and seconded by member representing Ughelli North, Hon Eric Oharisi.

    In the same vein, Hon. Tim Owhefere was reinstated as Majority Leader of the House, in view of a letter by the State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Barrister Kingsley Esiso, read on the floor of the house by the Speaker.

    A Select Committee, whose membership include, Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, Chairman, Rt Hon. Friday Osanebi, Hon Daniel Mayuku, Hon Angela Nwaka, Hon Pat Ajudua and Hon Samuel Mariere, was also constituted by the Speaker to allow for selection of new committee Chairmen and members.

    Recall, Rt. Hon. Monday Igbuya was impeached and suspended for three months alongside the Majority Leader, Hon Tim Owhefere in a May 11, 2017 plenary were Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori and Hon Johnson Erijo were sworn Speaker and Majority Leader respectively.

    Outside the chambers, the Assembly Complex was fortified by members of the Nigeria Police Force, while the observers gallery was filled to the capacity by Deltans who were eager to see the turn out of events.

    The plenary commenced at exactly 10:25am following a procession of principal officers into the chambers led by the new speaker, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.

    The mood of the house was bright and lofty, sequel to an opening prayer by the member representing Warri South I, Hon Shola Daibo after which the Sergeant at arms dished out order papers to members of the house.

    Welcoming members to the plenary, the first after the impeachment of the former Speaker, Rt. Hon Monday Igbuya, the new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori urged members not to lose sight of their mandate which is to make laws that would engender peace, order and good governance in the state.

    Oborevwori recounted that yesterday marked the return to legislative business after the event of the past weeks that resulted in his emergency as the new Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly.

    He appreciated the members for their confidence reposed in him at a time, according to him, when as an arm of government, they felt a new leadership was needed to move to greater heights.

    The new Speaker pledged to maintain an open door policy and provide quality leadership in the legislature that will help to move the state forward.

    According to him, the believe that the relationship between the legislature and the executive will witness renewed vigor has become stronger even as he commended the leadership and stakeholders of the People's Democratic Party, PDP, for its support whenever the need arises.

    "Permit me also to use this auspicious moment to thank the governor of Delta State, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa for his unflinching support to this great Assembly. "

    The Speaker also appreciated the role of traditional rulers and deltans for their goodwill and support, especially in the past weeks and appealed for sustain cooperation.

    Meanwhile, a bill for the Delta State Equipment Leasing Bill, 2017 sponsored by the member representing Ika North East, Hon Emeka Elekeokwuri, passed first reading on the floor of the house.

    The house will resume plenary tomorrow 24, May, 2017.
