    DELTA STATE GOVERNMENT SYMPATHISES WITH VICTIMS OF FLOOD DISASTER



    THE Delta State Government has sympathised with the victims of flood disaster whose houses and propertY worth millions of naira were destroyed at Chief Onyeka Okeke Street, Airport Road area and School of Midwifery road all in Okpanam, promising to assist them to ameliorate their plight.

    The Commissioner, Bureau for Special Duties, Barr. Ernest Ogwezzy, who was accompanied on an inspection and on-the-spot assessment visit to the affected areas by a Director in State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA,) Mrs. Gladys Puegene, described the flood disaster caused by a heavy rainfall as unfortunate and regrettable.

    He lamented the deep gully erosion caused by the flood at Chief Onyeka Okeke Street and adjourning streets, promising to liaise with his counterpart in the Ministry ofWorks, with a view to fixing the streets.

    The commissioner thanked God that no life was lost and cautioned Deltans and other residents in the state against building houses on natural waterways and flood prone areas to avoid flood disaster.

    Barr. Ogwezzy reiterated the Governor Okowa administration’s commitment to the wellbeing of the people, stressing the need for everybody to be proactive and conscious of his or her environment to mitigate disasters.

    In an interview, Chief Onyeka Okeke, whose house was seriously affected by the flood with part of the building, household items and important documents destroyed, commended the commissioner for his quick and prompt visit to the area to assess the extent of damage caused by the flood disaster.

    He also thanked God that no life was lost and appealed to the state government to come to his aid, saying that the “burden is too heavy for him to bear, especially at this time of economic recession.”

     They appealed to the state government to come to their aid to enable them stand on their feet once again.
