    WE ARE COMMITTED TO THE TOTAL REDUCTION OF MATERNAL AND CHILD MORTALITY IN DELTA STATE - DR. NICHOLAS AZINGE;

    The Delta State Government has reiterated its commitment in reducing maternal and child deaths in the State and also save more mothers from injuries or permanent illness due to childbirth.

    The Delta State Commissioner for Health Dr. Nicholas Azinge stated this at the 4 days training workshop on Long Acting Reversible Contraceptive (LARC) Family Planning (FP) Methods held at Nelrose Hotel, Asaba.

    He said the training is organized by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Save One Million Lives (SOML) Programme with Marie Stopes International Organization Nigeria (MSION) as Technical Assistance partners.

    “With Technical Assistance from Marie Stopes International Organization Nigeria (MSION), we are training 35 service providers across the State to improve access to Family Planning and ensure quality Long Acting Reversible Contraceptive services in the respective Family Planning facilities” he added.

    Dr. Azinge explained that during the London Summit on Family Planning held in 2012, Nigeria committed itself to increasing its Contraceptive Prevalence Rate (CPR) by 2% every year to achieve 36% by 2018 stating that this will avert 31,000 maternal deaths and 1.5 million child deaths and save more than 700,000 mothers from injuries or permanent illness due to childbirth.

    He further revealed that earlier trainings organized by Marie Stopes International in 2016 resulted in the increased uptake of Long Acting Reversible Contraceptive methods as evidenced by an additional CYP of 13,285.5 generated in the State and expressed confidence that this training of an additional 35 Service Providers, would have a similar successful result and consequently impact on the lives of our women.
    Commissioner Azinge said that the goal of the Ministry is to have at least one Service Provider that is trained to offer the full range of Family Planning Services in every facility offering Family Planning in the State and added that more Service Providers would be trained in the near future.

    He added that with the number of trained Service Providers including this present batch, the State would have trained about 40% of its Service Providers to offer the full range of Family Planning Services in the 400 facilities currently providing Family Planning.

    Earlier, in a goodwill massge, the representative of Marie Stopes International Organization of Nigeria (MSION), Mrs Ngozi  Ume said MSION is an organization that takes care of women and children and has as its vision a world where every birth is wanted and with a vision statement that says couples should have children by choice and not by chance.

    She stated that since the inception of MSION activities last year in the State, they have trained a total of 121 nurse midwives and 10 master trainers and pledged to provide adequate technical support to the State Government and  further requested the State to make good use of its master trainers that are readily avaiable for the training and supervising of other health providers that would be trained on long acting reversible contrception.

    In his address, the representative of the Police, Dr. Uwaifo J. Officer-in-Charge Medical, Nigerian Police Force, Asaba commended the organizers for the training saying its very apt.

    He urged the participants to participate fully and take the acquired knowledge to the health centres,primary health care and other places where ante-natal and post  and maternal and child health care setrvices are offered.

    Dr. Uwaifo commended MSION for using their organization to become a light and helper to women and childred and requested that such aqctivities be replicated in other States of the federation.
