Law makers permits use of premises for made-in-Nigeria commerce

 Members of the Kwara State House of Assembly have unanimously set aside every last Wednesday of the month for the display, and marketing of indigenous made-in-Nigeria materials within the legislative premises.

The lawmakers say this is part of their efforts at reducing pressure on the naira, diversifying the nation’s economy and strengthening production and patronage of locally made goods.



And to ensure due process and equal opportunity, the assembly has charged all craftsmen within the state to freely register with the Clerk of the Parliament, Mr. Ahmed Katsina Mohammed.

 The decision followed a motion without notice raised by the leader of the assembly, Mr. Hassan Oyeleke, titled “empowering Kwara entrepreneurs through patronage.” Mr. Oyeleke disclosed that the Senate President, Bukola Saraki pioneered the idea of ‘made-in-Nigeria’ hence the need for the state legislators to key into it.

 He said putting the scheme into practice rather than embracing it in words will position Kwara state for economic development in view of its numerous benefits to the people and the nation’s economy.

 On his part, the Speaker of the assembly, Ali Ahmad, who presided over Wednesday’s plenary maintained that the parliament is for the people, stressing that, the legislature would not relent at ensuring that indigenous entrepreneurs flourish.

 This he said, will reduce the nation’s over dependence on oil for survival. Recall that few months ago, the lawmakers set aside every Wednesday for members and legislative staff to appear in indigenous materials. The decision was part of measures aimed at empowering local entrepreneurs.

 A 300 hectare of farm settlement has also been established by the assembly with a view to cultivating soya beans.

 The lawmakers urged all Nigerians, especially Kwarans to patronize locally manufactured products within the state, adding that if this is done, it will boost the economy and empower entrepreneurs to improve on the quality of their products for export.

 The motion enjoyed the support of other members who took turns to elaborate on the benefits that could be derived from the initiative which include better future for Nigeria and salvaging her from the claws of a mono economy.
