    DELTA STATE GOVT GIVES FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO VICTIMS OF ASABA FLOOD DISASTER OF 22ND JULY 2017.




    This event which took place at the office of Bureau for special duties and was conducted by the Commissioner, Barr Ernest Ogwezzy. Speaking at the occasion, the Director of State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) Mrs Gladys Puegeren, rightly stated that "You will agree with me that today's ceremony is apt and timely as the intervention is coming within a very short time after the incident occurred." She went further to state that the financial assistance been given is based on the assessment carried out by officials of SEMA.

    Recalling that, when the incident happened, the Hon. Commissioner and SEMA officials visited them to see the extent of damage that was done by the flood. This exercise is not meant to compensate the victims but a show of the state government concern for the affected victims in order to ameliorate their plight. She ended her speech by appreciating the Executive Governor of Delta state His Excellency, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa for taking proactive steps in creating the enabling environment for SEMA to deliver on her mandate and by praying for the victims that such disaster does not occur again.

    Also speaking, Barr Ernest Ogwezzy stated that been a responsive government, His Excellency, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa directed that the disaster victims be provided with some financial/relief assistance so as to mitigate the effect of the disaster on the victims.

    The names of the beneficiaries and the amount they got is :

    1. Mr Tesola, A.N.                       #200,000.
    2. Mr. Kotor Sunday                    #200,000
    3. Mr. Milar Irene.                       #200,000
    4. Mrs. Iyamah Felicia U.            #200,000
    5. Revd. Emuoburie Patrick.       #200,000

    According to the commissioner, these were the first set of people that applied and this explains the reason they are the first set of beneficiaries with other persons to benefit later. Upon the occurrence of the Asaba flood disaster of 22nd July 2017, which affected over 300 people. The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) carried out an on-the-spot inspection/assessment visit of the affected areas to ascertain the extent of devastation and to sympathize with victims on behalf of the state government. Based on this assessment, the state government deemed it necessary to release a certain amount as financial assistance to the victims of that flood disaster.
