EXCLUSION OF PRIVATE INSTITUTIONS FROM THE DELTA STATE STUDENTS SPECIAL ASSISTANCE SCHEME

The Official motto of the National Association of Delta State Students (NADESSTU) reads thus: "EDUCATION FOR DEVELOPMENT AND UNITY". The UNITY came under close scrutiny with the single act of the Delta State Government in excluding Students in private Institutions from the registration process for the students Special Assistance Scheme.

In accordance with the Educational policies of our great Nation regarding tertiary institutions, Students are admitted into Federal, State or private Institutions after sitting for the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) exam, and attaining the required score for the desired course of study. Due to incessant strike actions, corruption in the admission process and dearth of learning equipments required for the study of certain courses and other obstacles, most Delta state students have been forced to seek admission into private institutions which are relatively more expensive than the Federal/ State Institutions.

The Exclusion of students in private institutions from benefiting from the Student Special Assistance Scheme has been perceived by most students as a punishment for seeking admission into private Institutions. Students in Private Institutions have remained active members in the apex body for Student Unionism in Delta State (NADESSTU) and it is shocking that Delta State Students in Private Institutions are being deprived from the opportunity of benefitting from the State Government Assistance Scheme.

It will be unwise to create a demarcation between Delta State Students as we are all together and face the same challenges in our individual pursuit for academic excellence. We call on the Delta State Government to look into our predicament and put our minds at rest by extending the Student Special Assistance Scheme to private Institutions.

    ABANUM IFESOCHI ABANUM,
    NADESSTU PRESIDENT,
    NOVENA UNIVERISTY CHAPTER.
