AS part of measures to ensure free flow of traffic during Christmas and New Year celebrations, the Delta State Police Command in synergy with other security agencies has flagged off the Safer Highway Traffic Scheme.
Flagging off the scheme close to the Bridge Head, Asaba, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Zanna Mohammed Ibrahim, represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, Mr. Undie Adie, said the scheme is a measure put in place to ensure free flow of human and vehicular movements during the celebrations.
He disclosed that traffic defaulters will be sanctioned as traffic mobile courts will be on ground to punish any driver who goes against the law.
The police boss said experience over the years has shown that during every Xmas and New Year celebrations, there was always a gridlock on the Asaba/Onitsha highway, adding that the scheme is meant to check the trend and ensure steady free flow of traffic.
While advising drivers to avoid drinking alcohol before driving, he appealed to travellers not to be in haste to avoid accident and traffic jam during the period.
On some potholes that may cause gridlock, the police commissioner said already, relevant ministries and agencies of government have been contacted to effect repairs on such bad portions of the road to enhance free flow of traffic.
According to him, “we have enough officers to handle the scheme because we are in synergy with the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), the army, Delta State Traffic Management Agency (DESTMA) officials and Nigeria Securities and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) among others.”
