Facebook Finally design a system to curb fake news and propaganda

Fake news and propaganda will not longer trend on Facebook, as Facebook test a system to detect fake news and propaganda. According to the Facebook boss Mark Zuckerbergon his post today disclosed  that Flag fake news and propaganda stories will be labeled with a warning on users’ news feeds.

The Menlo Park-based social media platform said Thursday that it has identified several sites that consistently push fake news and will demote posts from those sites in users’ feeds.

“We’ve focused our efforts on the worst of the worst, on the clear hoaxes spread by spammers for their own gain, and on engaging both our community and third party organizations,” wrote Adam Mosseri, vice president of Facebook’s News Feed.

Facebook will allow users to flag fake news by clicking the upper right-hand corner of a post. The company will also work with third-party fact-checking organizations. If the fact-checking organizations, which are signatories of Poynter’s International Fact Checking Code of Principles, identify a story as fake, it will get flagged as disputed. Stories that are disputed may also appear lower in News Feed.

Facebook’s own software will comb the site for stories that have triggered comments or reports by users saying they are fake news, per The Wall Street Journal. The software will examine articles that go viral in hopes of catching fake stories before they are shared widely.

The social media site will also disincentivize spammers who try to make money by disguising themselves as well-known news organizations.
